Dr. King’s dream lives on in all of us

Dear Editor:

As one of the world’s most recognized advocates of nonviolence and social change, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to the fight for equality and justice in America. It is for this reason that each year we take the time out of our busy lives to memorialize the civil rights leader on the anniversary of his birth.

It is vitally important to remember that January 20 is not simply a day off from school or work. It should be a day in which we remember the sacrifices Dr. King made for the freedom and equality of the people of the United States at a time when few were willing to take such a risk.

Now, almost 35 years after his death, the legacy of Dr. King lives on in the work he was able to accomplish and the path he set forth for others to follow.

Dr. King said in his famous speech, “I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and every mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

Dr. King’s dream continues to live on in all of us.
