Open for business Health club reopens under new management – and with improvements

As the chiropractor associated with the Health Concepts Gym for eight years, Dr. Joseph Salamone could hardly be considered unfamiliar with the operations. This is part of the reason why when Health Concepts suddenly closed its doors last year, Dr. Salamone was in a position to take over.

After months of anticipation, the health club reopened with new programs, a motivated staff and a new name, Atlantic Health and Fitness Center. Better yet, for local residents who lost their membership when the doors closed last July, Dr. Salamone agreed to honor the old memberships provided these members invest in an additional year’s subscription to the club.

“There is a positive energy at Atlantis,” Dr. Salamone said. “We are delighted to offer a new and improved complete health and fitness center to former Health Concept gym members, local residents and members of the nearby business community.”

Dr. Salamone had leased office space at Health Concepts since 1994, where he provided chiropractic and physical therapy services.

Although Dr. Salamone’s main office is in Fairfield, he has several local connections. He is on the staff of Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, where he is one of four chirographers in the nation with Emergency Room privileges. He also has a significant local clientele that includes members of the MetroStars soccer team, the New Jersey Devils ice hockey team and the New York Giants football team.

Atlantis is a 25,000 square foot facility dedicated to complete health and fitness. In opening reopening the facility, Dr. Salamone said he brought back some of the very competent staff that had operated the programs previously and added people of his own. Some of the decorations have yet to be completed – such as additional statuary and a fish tank that will help emphasis its nautical theme.

“We are bonded and registered with the state,” Dr. Salamone said, and claimed that his taking over the gym seemed like a good match. “I’ve had an office here for eight years, so I know most of the people who came here.”

He said he wanted to create a positive atmosphere for the patrons and the staff.

The center offers a variety of approaches to training, as well as a complete system of free weights and other gym machinery. One intriguing addition that seems to fit the nautical theme is the aqua massage table, a glass cabinet into which a person climbs and water flows through.

Dr. Salamone called it “a great experience.”

Staff will provide patrons with instruction on machines and guidance about exercise when requested.

The facility offers a variety of other features including several kinds of aerobics and even lessons in the martial arts, chiropractic care, physical therapy, pain management, acupuncture and massage.

“We are also involved with weight loss programs,” he said.

The facility is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The facility is located at 600 Plaza Drive, in the walkway area between Pier One Imports and Sizzler Steak House in the Harmon Meadow Mall. People with memberships to the former Health Concepts Gym need only bring in proof of their membership such as a contract or credit card payment and take out an additional year’s membership with Atlantis.
