The public spoke, we listened…

Dear Editor:

There is little doubt that the debate over future development of our city is a paramount concern to all citizens. This is evident from the public comment during our Master Plan workshops and the debate over the recent amendment to the redevelopment of the Southern Waterfront.

During my campaign for Mayor in 2001, I placed the development issue as a primary concern and continue to do so. Foremost, I believe in public debate and fulfilling the desires of citizens in developing a rational approach to our city’s future. I have long believed in building a consensus before proceeding with projects that will affect us for years to come.

That was my approach with the Block B development. After much public debate, I would like to thank the City Council for its vote to approve amendments to Block B on the Southern Waterfront redevelopment site. I am extremely pleased that the final piece of this site will be developed with less density, which is the desire of the vast majority of our residents.

The results of this vote will have a dynamic impact on our community. It will bring additional economic tools to stimulate our economy through the creation of jobs in the office building which will have an ancillary effect with merchants on our main streets. This vote will produce amenities like more open space and view corridors along 2nd and 3rd streets.

We will also gain a much needed world class hotel and banquet facilities which will allow us to compete with our neighbors and provide lodging for many of those who come to Hoboken for its restaurants and shops. It’s about time New Jersey’s second most popular tourist destination receives a hotel of its own!

Block B is the final stage of the Southern Waterfront redevelopment. The Port Authority has invested $100 million at this site. We have gained a waterfront walkway and the majestic Pier A Park. Over 1,200 jobs have been created in the first building at Block A; an equal number will be created next year when the second tower is occupied.

As I have stated many times: the public spoke and we listened. The reduction of square footage and design changes on Block B were an issue back when I was running for mayor. It was of the utmost importance that we address this issue.

I believe in taking a centrist approach to development which encompasses the elements of all sides. Unchecked, rampant development does not serve the needs of our community, nor does the belief that we should cease building altogether.

As we carry out our Master Plan, the public dialogue supports moderation. Rational and sane planning and development serves the interest of our residents today and for years to come.

Mayor David Roberts
