Dear Editor:
Great, let’s put vampires in charge of the blood bank.
I refer to the City’s plan to abolish the Hoboken Parking Authority.
Two simple facts stand out:
1. The Garden Street Parking Garage Fiasco notwithstanding, the HPA has been fiscally sound for over two decades. It operates at a surplus. It is about to open hundreds of new parking spaces.
2. The City of Hoboken runs a chronic operating deficit. This year, I’m told, the City will sell off between $5 million to $10 million of public property to pay recurring operating expenses. Quite a feat at a time when the property tax base has expanded as much as it has.
I=m hard-pressed to see how any member of the City Council can characterize such a move as fiscally responsible, and in the best interests of the people of the City of Hoboken. It puts even more cash in the hands of those who have not shown themselves capable of acting in a fiscally responsible manner.
Let’s hope Mayor Roberts will take steps necessary to rectify this situation.
As I said, its like putting vampires in charge of a blood bank.
