You can’t be held hostage by tow truck drivers anymore!

Dear Editor:

I would like local residents to know that our Governor has signed legislation to protect motorists whose vehicles break down on New Jersey roads.

On August 14 Governor James McGreevey signed a bill that requires tow truck operators to accept both cash and credit cards for payment. In the past, many drivers were faced with being left on the highway by tow truck operators who would accept only cash. The governor was moved by the death of a Morris County woman who was left stranded on a highway because she did not have $40 in cash to pay the tow truck operator. She was killed when she was struck by another vehicle while waiting on the road with her car.

I applaud Governor McGreevey for his stand on this issue and his support for New Jersey’s consumers.

Our residents should know that if they break down on New Jersey’s roads they cannot be held hostage to unscrupulous tow truck operators who operate on a cash-only basis. Anyone who encounters a payment problem with a tow truck operator is urged to contact the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
