Arthur’s Tavern Superb steakhouse continues to serve community

Arthur’s Tavern is a Hoboken landmark. On the corner of Third and Washington streets in the city’s downtown area, this famous steakhouse has served patrons for almost two decades.

With a basic philosophy of providing “good prices, good quality, and good service,” according to the establishment’s manager, Arthur’s keeps their style simple, and it works.

Inside the spacious restaurant is the main floor dining room. Large enough for approximately 45 patrons, there is another dining room next to it that seats as many people. Walk to the back, and you’ll find another dining room suitable for more than 50 patrons and accessible through a side entrance on Third Street. A happy hour lounge/bar area is located on the second floor, while a private catering dining room with a kitchen located across from it.

The servers are attentive and there is hardly any wait for a table on the weekends. Although always busy, Arthur’s staff works like clockwork to ensure a comfortable dining experience. The tavern is a place where patrons may enjoy entrees like the baked New Bedford scrod ($12.95) with a pint of domestic beer, a house salad ($3.50) and homemade cheesecake ($3.50) for dessert. They feature over two dozen beers, and almost any kind of hamburger selection. The walls are decorated with neon signs of popular alcoholic beverages, and red and white gingham tablecloths. Arthur’s is ideal for a power business lunch, a night out with the family or hanging out with the guys for happy hour.

My Meal

I began my meal with a large bowl of French onion soup ($2.95). The creamy soup was topped with melted cheese. It was sweet and the cheese was not too thick. I enjoyed my soup with Arthur’s famous garlic bread ($2.50), which came covered in cheese. They offer frozen drinks like pina colada, strawberry daiquiri, and margaritas. Other appetizers include a shrimp cocktail ($6.95), Caesar salad ($3.50) and chili ($3.95). I tried the tasty chili. Although not too spicy, it was terrific with its blend of beans, cheddar cheese and chopped celery. I had the chili with a pint of beer. I strongly recommend it.

For the main course I enjoyed Arthur’s 24-ounce steak ($15.95). Served medium well, as suggested by our waitress, it was a remarkable piece of meat with butter sauce, chopped onions and a side of home fries. A rib eye cut, the steak is also offered in 48-ounces. I tried the BBQ ribs ($15.95). Served in a creamy sauce, the ribs were enough for two.

For dessert I had a chocolate mousse pie ($3.75). This dessert is perfect for chocolate lovers with its rich and creamy cold fudge and sweet mousse.

Through the month of August, Arthur’s is offering the $4.95 lunch, consisting of a 9-ounce burger with coleslaw, all you can eat health salad, pickles, red peppers and a choice of soft drink or mug of domestic beer. Lunch is served in less than 15 minutes, according to the management and it is offered Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
