Dear Editor:
As New Jersey residents take to the outdoors this summer, it is important to remind people of the dangers posed by mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus. Over the past three years, 18 people along the East Coast have been killed by West Nile virus and there were 66 reported human infections. In New Jersey, one person died and 12 others contracted the virus.
People infected with West Nile virus generally feel no symptoms or mild, flu-like symptoms. However, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of more severe diseases.
New Jersey has been aggressive in its efforts to combat the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus and remain on the offensive through this summer and fall. Anything that can collect water can serve as a mosquito breeding ground. Residents can help by eliminating pools of standing water, maintaining swimming pools, and keeping birdbaths clean.
For additional information and tips on how to protect yourself from West Nile virus visit the Department of Health and Senior Services website at www.state.nj.us/health.
