Hoping for better ethnic and cultural diversity in local government

Dear Editor:

As a member of the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders representing the City of Union City, I have done everything I can to make sure Union City residents receive the County dollars they deserve. For too many years, Union City was forgotten at the County level, except at election time.

There is a definite lack of representation on Hudson County boards and agencies by Union City residents. I ask both outgoing County Executive Bernard Hartnett and County Executive-Elect Thomas DeGise to keep in mind that Union City is the second largest municipality in the county and represents a great ethnic and cultural diversity, something that is lacking in general in County administration.

People have settled in Union City, and in Hudson County, from all over the world. They thought enough of Union City to settle here and work toward their vision of the American Dream, while contributing culturally and economically to our community. We should reward their contributions by inviting them to participate in our county and municipal government, truly representing the diverse population of this area.
