Dear Editor:
Elaine Flood tried her utmost to show tolerance and compassion. It would serve a useful purpose if she could channel it into writing a check to the Lucci family. On the North Bergen editorial page, next to Flood’s letter, the Lucci family pleaded for donations to help defray the cost of treating Michael Stine’s devastating brain tumor.
The least open-minded people are those who see themselves as such. If she really was one, it would be simple to just turn the advice around. Let those who believe in God refrain from uttering them out loud and say them to themselves. Nobody would object or know and the problem would vanish. It should be obvious that it really is you who are imposing God on everyone else.
God is not the problem. It is religious zeal and dogma, invented from a diary of family trees and titled Bible that for thousands of years has perpetrated innumerable holy wars. The 48 years you talk about is meaningless, taken out of context and displays utter ignorance of history.
The God that you attach all those wonderful attributes to, if such an entity existed, would not have stood by and just let it happen. The people who turn to God in moments of despair become useless when they turn to the heavens, leave the responsibility to someone else instead of looking down on mother earth that feeds them and concentrate on actions that bring accomplishment they will not materialize from the air.
Metaphysics causes people to buy tickets for space travel before the supply runs out. We pay through the nose for people who still believe in Buck Rogers and even if they could figure out how to do it, very few people live beyond one hundred years. Space is a longer trip than that. There are so many problems on earth that we refuse to live in a state of fantasy and we are admittedly the minority. Why don’t some of you come down to earth and help us find real solutions to them? The psychiatric wards are full of comatose beings who live in the world of Thou Shalt Nots. Your world is a world of repression. Check the state institutions if you doubt my word.
As far as swearing oaths on Bibles, at court two people usually raise their hands. Do you really believe that both of them will tell the truth? Even the judge, the president, all the politicos swear on the Bible. They all conclude with “so help me God.” I wish I knew when this habit was adopted. Are you convinced that they have any concept of the word ethics? They don’t even respect their own fear of God, that they live by as directed by the most unethical of all. Their beloved church and clergy.
To close, it has never been the majority that has advanced knowledge and science. Most people are ignorant until someone shows them the way, as can be witnessed as soon as they open their mouths. Wake up and join the minority. The rest are sheep.
Angelo Nanfro
P.S. And don’t forget Michael Stine.
