A self-described "urban folkie," Amy Speace is stepping out in her own right with a national tour to support her solo debut "Fable," released on Twangirl Music. The album contains music for "city girls with mud on their boots." Speace’s unique storytelling abilities have won her widespread praise and earned her a finalist’s spot in the 2001 USA Songwriting Competition, held in the New York. Speace’s vocal versatility is impressive.
"I want to be the next Dar Williams, but with an edge," Speace said from her home in Hoboken. "[I want to be] the next breakthrough, indie folk woman. I love the life of a musician. I’ve never been happier than I am now."
A classically trained Shakespearean actress with an ear for music since childhood and an eye for great story, songwriting has long been simmering inside her.
On "Fable," Speace delves into life and love’s deepest emotions with songs that often start in fairy tales and end up staring at cold reality. In the New York City region, Speace plays with a five-piece band and on the road, she tours with a percussionist who accentuates her guitar playing and vocals.
The Baltimore native, currently mile-square resident, now plays with Hoboken musician James Mastro, who also owns the Guitar Bar. Oh Jimmy
The popular folk local rock band Oh Jimmy is a fun group to listen to. They play upbeat acoustic sets and plugged sessions that are very enjoyable. A terrific live band, Oh Jimmy is currently touring in support of their new album "Free on Rails," released on Inlet recordings and produced by Hobokenite Mike Daly (formerly of Whiskeytown).
The band consists of Neal Harrison (vocals), Eric Casimiro (lead guitar), William Paris (bass), and Keith Cantamessa (drums).
The guys will be playing at the Goldhawk on July 18 at 8 p.m. with Daly. The show will be their first in their hometown. Their influences include bands like Wilco, Neil Young and the Beatles. Oh Jimmy’s new album is a five-track EP that is fresh and unique.
"We like to support Hoboken’s art scene," said Paris, during a recent phone interview.
The show at the Goldhawk will be a celebration of great talent, according to Paris. Oh Jimmy has developed a strong chemistry with great melodies and tight harmonies during their live performances.
