Be prepared for storms and blackouts

Dear Editor:

The Mid-Atlantic states are now in the midst of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30. The first major storms of summer visited New Jersey a week ago, bringing lighting, high winds, tree damage and power outages to some customers in Central and Northern New Jersey. The storm left some 10,100 PSE&G customers, primarily in Essex and Middlesex Counties, without power.

PSE&G offers some suggestions on how to prepare for summer storms, which can sometimes arrive unexpectedly.

1. Stay away from downed power lines. All downed power lines should be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over the lines and do not touch anything that a downed wire might be in contact with.

2. If you see a downed power line or want to report a power outage, call PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

3. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Food will stay frozen between 36 and 48 hours in a fully loaded freezer (24 hours in a half-full freezer) if the door is closed. Throw a heavy blanket over the refrigerator and freezer for extra insulation.

4. Use battery operated radios and TVs to receive up-to-date information.

5. Use flashlights when possible. If you are using candles, exercise extreme caution – do not leave candles unattended and do not place near flammable materials (papers, curtains, etc.).

6. Turn off lights and appliances to avoid overloading home circuits once power is restored.

Leave one light “on” so that you will know when power has been restored. Unplug sensitive appliances (computers, VCRs, microwaves, etc.) to avoid damage from voltage fluctuation.

7. Do not use charcoal or gas grills indoors. Both can cause a build-up of deadly carbon monoxide gas.

8. Stay off the roads, if possible, if there have been high winds and tree damage. This will allow law enforcement and utilities to manage traffic and clear roadways.
