PSE&G reminds us, call before you dig, it’s the law

Dear Editor:

At PSE&G, it’s our job to “make things work for you.” In fact, we’ve been working hard in New Jersey communities for nearly 100 years.

But there are times when we need the public’s help in order to serve you better. Underground utilities exist everywhere, perhaps even on individual properties. Digging can cause disruption to vital utility services and result in costly delays, expensive repairs, environmental or property damage, personal liability, injury and even loss of life.

Whether planting a new tree or garden, installing a sprinkler system, mailbox post or fencing, installing ground rods for electrical systems, or excavating for a home addition, a call needs to be placed beforehand to know where it’s safe to dig.

For everyone’s well being and the safety of our underground utilities, please call the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, One-Call Unit at 1-800-272-1000 before beginning to dig. It’s the law.

We ask that the following be taken into consideration:

Call Before You Dig: at least three full business days before digging starts, call 1-800-272-1000 for a free mark out of underground gas, water, cable, telephone and electric utility lines.

Wait the Required Time: wait three full days after calling before doing any digging. Underground utilities will be marked with paint, flags or stakes. If the site does not have underground utilities, parties will be notified. Respect the Marks: always hand dig and locate underground utilities within two feet of marked lines.

Dig With Care: making the call before digging will help prevent property damage and potential injuries. Please be sure to dig safely.
