Dear Editor:
Make sure you have the correct Social Security numbers to accurately report numbers for yourself, your spouse and your dependants on your tax return. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will not process your return with missing or incorrect Social Security numbers. IRS will have to contact you, the taxpayer, to get correct information before issuing a refund.
To avoid delaying your refund, make sure your name and Social Security number, and the names and Social Security numbers of your spouse and any dependants listed on the return, agree with the name and number shown on each individual’s Social Security card.
To get an original, duplicate or corrected Social Security card, call Social Security’s toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment. If you want to complete the application for a Social Security number before you take or mail it to a local office, visit us on the Internet at www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html to print a copy of the Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card.
If you applied for a Social Security number for your newborn when you gave information for your baby’s birth certificate, you will receive your baby’s Social Security card in the mail within two weeks after Social Security receives the necessary information from your state’s vital statistics office. If you waited to apply for your baby’s number and need information about getting your child a Social Security number, visit us on the Internet at www.ssa.gov/pubs/10023.html to view the leaflet Social Security – Numbers For Children.
For more information about your Social Security number and card, you can visit us at www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html to view the factsheet Social Security – Your Number and Card. Or call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office and ask for the factsheet.
