The Democrats and reality

Dear Editor:

The Democrats. Joseph Doria, Jr., is an outstanding public servant and has served with distinction as Mayor of Bayonne, Minority Leader and Speaker of the Assembly and had the support of all Hudson County Democrats, including Mayor Albio Sires, for re-election as Speaker.

The reality. Governor-Elect Jim McGreevey must lead the Democratic Party big picture/state-wide, and he realized a Doria Speaker candidacy would split the party and result in a speaker from south Jersey.

He avoided such split by supporting Albio Sires for Assembly Speaker which unified the party and also recognized Hudson County, a good omen for his administration and for New Jersey.

Mayor Sires stood loyal and firm when the Governor-Elect McGreevey called on him with his solution; and Mayor Doria, Dem. Chairman Bob Menendez and Democratic leaders throughout the state have seen the wisdom of mature and dedicated Democratic Party unity under Governor McGreevey, which has passed its first test as the party of the people at this critical time.
