TASTY TIDBITS England takes over at Hudson Catholic; basketball season tips off

After carving his place as a respected baseball coach at Hudson County Prep for the last three seasons, Derek England has been named the head coach at Hudson Catholic, where he inherits a decent program with a fine stable of returning position players.

England replaces veteran coach Mike Zadroga, who resigned at the end of last season.

England will be able to work closely with long time friend Chipper Benway, who is now the athletic director at Hudson Catholic. He is a fine coach, with a background of collegiate coaching at Columbia University before heading to Hudson County Prep and should do a fine job with the Hawks…

Rumor has it that former New Jersey City University football coach Roy Miller is in line to replace Tom Ferreiro at Lincoln High School. Stay tuned…

How about this kid in California whose father is suing the kid’s high school for $1.5 million because the kid was cut from the varsity basketball team? The father claims that cutting the kid hurts his "future professional earnings."

Say what? If that’s the case, then St. Peter’s Prep better hire the law firm of Will, Cheatham and Lye, because I’m coming forth with my suit due to all the times my future earnings were damaged from being cut from the baseball, basketball and bowling teams, to the tune of a total of nine times.

If this kid in California gets cut once and it’s worth $1.5 mil, then I’m worth 10 times that. The lawsuit is pending, Prep people…

Basketball season tips off this weekend, as mentioned with the preview of the fabulous Friars, clearly the best team in New Jersey.

But who are the other teams to watch in Hudson County? Well, in the boys’ circles, pundits point to Dickinson, Ferris and Hudson Catholic as teams to watch. Among the girls, Emerson, St. Dominic Academy and defending Parochial B state champion Marist are in the hunt for HCIAA honors.

We’ll have more on the basketball season in next week’s editions of the Hudson Reporter…

Former Hoboken and Penn State quarterback Rashard Casey is close to signing a free agent contract to play for the New Jersey Gladiators of the Arena Football League. Well, it was a start for Kurt Warner, so maybe it can work for Casey…

The Yankees got Jason Giambi? Big deal. I’m so happy about the Mets getting future Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar that I could spit…

Now, if someone can put Juan Gonzalez under my Christmas tree…

The St. Peter’s College women’s basketball team was supposed to have a tough year this season, but thanks to the play of fabulous freshman Tyiana Sears and the resurgence of forward Felicia Harris, the Peahens are 7-1. Chalk up another great season for veteran coach Mike Granelli

Congrats to the Jersey City Department of Recreation for holding an indoor track meet at the Jersey City Armory this weekend. Maybe this is the beginning of a return to glory for the Armory, which has been rumored to be a recreation spot on and off for the past decade…
