Fiore wins 200th at Montclair; Durango, Radigan to Rutgers

Congratulations to former St. Peter’s College head basketball coach Ted Fiore, who won the 200th game of his collegiate coaching career last week for his current school, Montclair State University.

Fiore, who was unceremoniously fired after leading SPC to two NCAA Tournament berths in 1991 and 1995, has enjoyed a new vigor in his coaching career at Montclair State. This season, Fiore has two former Hudson County standouts on his roster with the Red Hawks, namely flashy guard Jose Macias of Emerson, who has been brilliant thus far, and forward Harold Williams of St. Aloysius in Jersey City.

On a personal note, it’s good to see such a brilliant teacher as Fiore still doing what he loves to do, namely coaching basketball. The game needs him as much as Fiore needs the game…

Although Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano suffered through a brutal first season, he still does a fine job recruiting local talent, getting Memorial’s speedster Bryan Durango and Hoboken’s fine punter Joe Radigan to commit to scholarship offers almost immediately after the season ended last week.

Durango and Radigan paid a recruiting visit to Piscataway last weekend and came away so impressed that they both decided to waste no time and commit to the Schiano and the Scarlet Knights right away, before getting truly involved in the recruiting game. Good for the local kids and even better for Rutgers, which needs all the help from the local talent as the Scarlet Knights can get…

Speaking about the recruiting front, Miguel Merrick of Emerson will visit the University of Iowa this weekend, but the Hawkeyes’ coaching staff wants Merrick as a defensive back and not as a wide receiver.

If the coaches take one look at the highlight tape that coach Eddie Marinez compiled, chances are that they might change their minds about Merrick being a receiver because the tape features downright brilliance…

Sad to hear that Lincoln football coach Tom Ferreiro is about to resign his position with the Lions. Tommy was very good for the kids of Lincoln and he was a solid football coach in an area sorely in need of quality coaches. We wish him well…

Good to hear that former Lincoln product Anthony Green has been re-signed by the New York Giants and will remain on the roster for the remainder of the season. Green was released by the team a month ago, after making the roster out of training camp as a free agent. Green was a fine fullback at the University of West Virginia after graduating from Lincoln a few years back…

Ran into Tyrell Dortch at the Hoboken-Prep game two weeks ago. The Michigan State standout, who suffered a severely broken ankle while playing defensive back for the first time for the Spartans last month, vows a full recovery and will return to the Spartans’ regular rotation at running back in time for spring practice. Dortch said that he will be in a cast until Christmas and he will begin rehabbing the injury here at home before heading back to East Lansing…

The preseason accolades continue to pour in for the fabulous Friars of St. Anthony. The national basketball website/recruiting service, called HoopsUSA, has ranked the Friars as the No. 2 team in the entire nation, behind Westchester of Los Angeles. USA TODAY will have the Friars as their No. 3 team, when the high school basketball season begins next week…

The annual MSG Network Heisman Breakfast, where local football stars are able to meet this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, as well as other past Heisman winners, will take place Monday morning. The breakfast will take place this year at the Marriott Marquis in midtown, rather than the Downtown Athletic Club, which suffered structural damage after the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. Several Hudson County players will be honored. We’ll have more in next week’s editions…
