Remembrance at Liberty State Park

The state of New Jersey will host a service in Liberty State Park tonight (Sunday, Sept. 23) for remembrance and reflection in honor of the victims and heroes of the World Trade Center disaster. However, you must have a special free pass to get into the event.

The state planned to admit only those who obtained passes in advance. Depending on when you pick up this newspaper, passes may still be available.

If you are a family or friend of a victim, please call (866) NJCRISIS. All others can visit the Liberty State Park Visitors’ Center, Liberty State Park, Jersey City. The park can be reached at 915-3404. The state was hoping to give passes out by 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, but there may still be some available at the visitors’ center on Sunday.

The service will be held on the South Overlook at the park in Jersey City from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m. A memorial area will be available for photos of loved ones.

The event will take place on the lawn, rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

No packages, drinks, coolers, duffel bags, or backpacks will be allowed into the park. Remember to leave those at home, or you’ll end up leaving them with an attendant.

There will be parking available on-site.

New Jersey Network, and possibly other radio stations, will broadcast the event live.

The state has also set up a Family Assistance Center at Liberty State Park. It has representatives from various state and federal departments. More information can be obtained at (866) NJCRISIS.

To get to the park, take the Turnpike to Exit 14B, follow signs to Liberty State Park, bear left at the toll, and go straight through the light at the bottom of the ramp. Continue down Morris Pesin Drive until you reach the barrier. Make a right and head to the parking lot.
