Dear Editor:
In July 1997, the residents of Ward A graciously elected me their councilman. During the past four years it has been my honor to serve not only the people of Ward A but all the people of Jersey City as a councilman. Although some people labeled me the “anti Councilman” because of my opposition to various policies or programs that the Administration promoted, I hope in the end they realized I was merely trying to be the people’s voice.
As my term ends on June 30, I can proudly look back upon the following accomplishments: New York City garbage will not be coming to Jersey City;
My stand on the Waterfront abatements and demand for more recreation led to the creation of the Recreation Fund paid for by the developers;
I demanded fiscal responsibility by the Administration, and I did not vote for one tax increase; With the help of Tommy McCann and Kevin Sluka we were able to get lights for the Little League at Metro Field;
Working closely with the residents around NJCU we rectified a 30-year parking problem;
Working closely with residents on Gates Avenue we stopped a 24-hour gas station/convenience store from disrupting their neighborhood.
The above are some examples of the more publicly known aspects of my term as councilman. I am probably most proud however, of the interaction that my aide, Chester Jankowski and I had with the general public not only in Ward A but throughout the city. We have met hundreds of people that truly have a dedication and love for this City. That is commendable. It was my honor to work closely with them in serving, protecting and preserving the greatest asset Jersey City has, our neighborhoods.
On July 1 a new Administration will be sworn into office. I truly wish Mayor Cunningham and the new Council the best of luck and Godspeed in the difficult tasks that lie ahead of them. Although I did not support Mayor Cunningham in the runoff he has my full support now, and I wish him much success. I know Glenn Cunningham to be a good man, and I truly believe he will rise to the occasion. I also urge all Jersey City residents to give him your support because remember, together we can accomplish great things.
In closing, I would like to thank all of the Jersey City employees from City Hall throughout the various departments that assisted me and made my job that much easier. Politicians will come and go but you are the life blood of the City. I also thank my aide, Chester, whose dedicated service and friendship I can never repay. He is truly one of Jersey City’s finest citizens. Finally, I would like to thank my family for their unselfish support during my term as councilman. Specifically my wife Suzanne, who balanced managing our home and my poltiical career. Also, my father, Retired Superior Court Judge Robert F. Cavanaugh, Sr., who ran my law practice. Thank you both for allowing me the opportunitty to serve the people of Jersey City.
God Bless Jersey City and God Bless America!
Bob Cavanaugh
Former Ward A Councilman
