Responding to controversy over the Assisi Center

Dear Editor:

In response to all the recent controversy regarding the Assisi Center, I offer the following information.

I am currently volunteering at the Center and have observed kind, caring, loving staff tending to animals’ needs. The Center is always clean, and all animal cages are in good condition. The Center has had over 600 adoptions since August 2000. This weekend two of the Center’s oldest dogs were adopted by some folks in New Hampshire to live out their golden years.

Is there room for improvement, yes, but that is where the Center needs help from concerned individuals. The Center is currently having a membership drive; we are recruiting volunteers and have also received a grant from a company to recreate a new cat room! We are also planning our first annual street fair to take place in October.

Instead of the Hudson County Animal League joining hands with the Assisi Center for the benefit of animalkind, they choose to bash the Center and its efforts. Does it really matter if the Assisi Center is a no-kill center and the Hudson County is not. No it should not! If these two organizations could pull together, let go of the past and look to the future, Hudson County could have the best animal care facility in the State of New Jersey.
