Dear Editor:
Not too many people are proposing that Democracy is a no win system as much as I feel I have. That is by word, not violence. Such actions, when all around you are people that look at you cross-eyed, when you find yourself a voice in the wilderness, has caused me great anxiety and a strange feeling that somehow I’m doing something wrong and a strange guilt had developed in me.
Our founding fathers are depicted as great and infallible. Were they impractical dreamers? Did they intend to create a great democratic society? Why does the salute to the flag say “And to the Republic for which it stands?” Did their search for freedom and justice cause blindness, that such a loose system could cause only mediocrity? Am I blind when I observe what is promoted worldwide, whether kindly or cruelly, as Democracy, really being a misnomer for “Capitalism Run Rampant” with nobody in charge and nobody responsible?
Well relief to my anxiety came Saturday, June 2 when I accidentally tuned the TV to the “Books & Authors” program. I listened to Phillip K. Howard brilliantly presenting many answers to the same questions I have above mentioned. For anyone who has long ago stopped buying the newspapers just to check the lottery number, quickly turn to the sports page and throw the paper into the garbage, please read what Howard is proposing. I am grateful to him for reminding me that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I caught myself falling into that trap and he bailed me out. Guilt reduced!
