Dear Editor:
I would like to thank all the people who voted for me in the May 8 Jersey City election. During the campaign I met people from all over the City who encouraged my candidacy and embraced the Cavanaugh Team’s message of putting the people’s interest above all special interest. Trying to get that message out via a grass roots campaign, however, proved insurmountable against the campaigns that were spending over a half million dollars each. Nonetheless, I am not discouraged by the outcome and nor should you be. I am disappointed that only 38,762 of the 105,393 registered voters exercised their right to vote. We will continue to get politics as usual as long as this apathy exists.
A strong democracy requires an informed and active citizenry. To be informed and cast a vote in an election is not merely our right but our civic duty. The only way to ensure that our elected officials will respond to our needs is to participate in the process. Parents and teachers should instill this in our children, and every adult eligible to vote should seize every opportunity to exercise that right. On June 26 is the State primaries and November is the State general election. Every eligible voter should inquire about the candidates, get informed about the issues and vote in every election. Otherwise, you have nothing to complain about.
In closing, I want to specifically thank my friends and family that unselfishly dedicated their time to help my candidacy. Your support especially during the most frustrating aspects of the campaign (me being one of them) will never be forgotten. God Bless you all.
Bob Cavanaugh
