The streets of Hoboken

Dear Editor:

Mayor Anthony Russo has proposed to bring new parking garages to our city, adding 1,250 additional places to park our cars. Although this is a step in the right direction, I feel this may not be the best direction to take. Monthly parking is costly, and not every Hoboken resident has the extra income to purchase a place to call home for their automobile.

This past Sunday evening, as I was cruising Washington Street to score a spot, I spied parked cars from Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island and even California. These cars, with their out-of-state plates, failed to display a Hoboken parking permit, a permit that the city authorities claim is mandatory to park on our city streets. Yet, here they were, taking up our spots.

Here’s my suggestion to our parking dilemma. For the next month enforce the parking permit law each and every day. Tow and ticket those out of town cars not displaying a parking permit. Free up street parking for Hoboken residents, and Hoboken residents only.

It’s a win-win situation, look at it this way: The city’s pocketbook will fatten due to ticketing and towing out-of-state cars. New parking garages will flourish. Hoboken residents will have street parking, at last.
