Dear Editor:
Mayor Turner’s letter regarding development of the Weehawken waterfront was right on the money. The so-called “Friends of the Weehawken Waterfront” are being selfish and spiteful and they are doing a disservice to the waterfront and to the people of Weehawken.
After more than a year of negotiations, we have a wonderful plan for construction of the brownstones. The mayor negotiated a strip of land from the state, which provides for a road in front of the brownstones and moves them back from the walkway.
Now after saying that’s the last thing they wanted, the “Friends” say they want more. It is apparent that what the “Friends” want is no development at all.
The “Friends” have been guilty by misrepresenting the fact from day one. Their latest cry is for parking on the road that we wouldn’t have had without Mayor Turner’s efforts. They have known from day one that the land area east of the railroad right of way and main roadway is sufficiently wide to permit parking in addition to the just gained 15 foot road. They say no parking is planned for residents on the waterfront, when, in truth, there will be approximately 500 spaces for residents when all is said and done.
“Friends of the Weehawken Waterfront” drop your lawsuit. Let’s have a first-best project rather than a second-best. Stop acting like spoiled brats.
