Parking permit laws seem to ‘change like the wind’!

Dear Editor:

This letter is regarding parking permits for Jersey City residents.

I have been a resident of Jersey City since 1991. Since that time, I agree that Jersey City has become a better and more attractive place to live, thus making downtown parking more difficult. However, why is it that the parking enforcement laws (which are supposed to benefit Jersey City residents) are actually designed to work against them? For example, the laws on parking permits seem to change like the wind. One year, I was told the parking permit was good indefinitely. Another time, I am told it has to be renewed every year. Besides that, how often has the parking authority moved in the last 10 years? At least three times, I’m sure.

Furthermore, I recently received two tickets, one on Thursday and the other on Friday, for not having a valid permit. Well, I have a permit (but I guess now the law has changed again), and I guess I’ll have to get another permit. But for those of us who work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., do you think ticketing a vehicle twice in two days is fair?

Also, I obviously live in Jersey City if I have a permit; so why make a “big” deal if it may be expired? Also, how about notifying people by mail if the permit laws have changed again?

In sum, if the permit laws were enacted to ensure parking for residents, why make it a hassle for them?
