Let’s keep Liberty State Park’s objective the way it was intended

Dear Editor:

When Liberty State Park in Jersey City was first conceived, the objective was to create a free, clean, beautiful habitat for humans as well as birds and small mammals; a non-commercial, non-privatized park.

In time with the support of our governor and the state legislature, they have created a splendid, pristine park which is currently the most visited of all our state facilities; a truly remarkable achievement.

In time, unfortunately, private investors schemed to create ways of making the park a means for personal wealth. A golf course was the first proposal, which was wisely rejected by our publicly elected officials. Now, a waterpark is being considered with the cost of admission in double figures; with costs in air pollution, traffic congestion, etc. far exceeding that figure.

This type of private enterprise using public lands is a true violation of trust. Such an enterprise would drastically distract from the beauty of the park and would additionally discourage the plethora of walkers, cyclists and families who enjoy the many nature trails, walkways and concerts which are offered freely to the public at Liberty State Park.

I fervently urge Governor Whitman, our State Legislature and citizens of the Garden State to stand firm and reject this self-seeking financial scheme.

Can we not maintain a successful public facility free of greed and selfish ambition? The answer is a resounding affirmative “Yes” if we remain vigilant in our opposition to those who would scheme to profit financially, even from the public trust. The park belongs to the people — not to developers nor to misguided politicians.
