Weehawken earns eighth win; Stevens’ women make smart move
There were two other local high school football games during the Thanksgiving weekend of note.
First, Weehawken defeated Secaucus 25-14 to improve their record to 8-3, which sets a new school record for wins in a season.
The Indians got 186 yards and two touchdowns from Peter Martinez in the victory, which marked the first-ever night game at Secaucus High School. Portable lights were brought in to light the field for the contest.
For a program that once lost 40 straight games stretching over five full seasons, winning 15 games in two years is a major accomplishment for head coach Mike Guasconi and his staff.
Guasconi was rewarded by being named as the Bergen County Scholastic League National Division Coach of the Year, an honor richly deserved…
The other contest of the weekend was the annual Turkey Day showdown between Emerson and Union Hill, now the state’s third longest active Thanksgiving Day series.
Emerson won this year, taking a 14-3 decision, to end its successful season at 7-3.
Victor Ayala was the star of the game for the Bulldogs, scoring both of his team’s touchdowns.
Union Hill still leads the series by a 38-36-9 margin, but as you can see, there isn’t much difference between the two schools after all these years…
Even though there wasn’t a state championship to be had by Hudson County’s grid teams in 2000, there still were plenty of impressive performances, like the two aforementioned teams, Weehawken and Emerson…
I suffered the shock of all shocks the other night, watching ESPN’s SportsCenter, and the highlights of the University of Michigan game. The announcer mentioned that Michigan had a center with a size 21 shoe and then they showed the youngster getting an offensive rebound and throwing down a slam dunk.
The youngster was none other than Josh Moore, the former St. Anthony 7-footer, who bounced his way off the Friars to a prep school in Connecticut and was then signed by Rutgers, but couldn’t cut the grade academically. I was certain that we had heard the last of Moore, but apparently, he’s bounced back again and is starting for the University of Michigan. Wonders never cease…
On the local college front, the Stevens Tech women’s hoop team, off to a 3-1 start, has been bolstered by the play of freshman Aracely Cruz from Union Hill, who has been averaging close to 20 points per game so far.
Stevens Tech’s Lady Ducks also have a familiar face on the coaching staff, namely former SPC standout Patty Marchese, who joined the staff this season as an assistant. I’ve always thought that Marchese had the makings of a good coach and she’s getting her first chance at Stevens…
Last week, DePaul University traveled to Florida State for a game, which meant that former St. Anthony teammates Rashon Burno and Delvon Arrington faced each other for the first time. They apparently both wore each other out, because Burno only had six points and Arrington had five, both way below their averages…
The Hudson Catholic baseball team is still looking for assistant coaches. Any interested applicants should contact athletic director Terry Matthews at 332-5970…
The Hudson County Hall of Fame committee has come up with an excellent field for the 2001 Induction Ceremonies. We’ll have more on the inductees in future weeks, but the Jan. 25 dinner should be a very memorable evening…
I was set to offer get well wishes to local sports columnist Ed "The Faa" Ford, who was recently hospitalized, but he was spotted at the Seton Hall-St. Peter’s game at the Meadowlands Monday night, so I guess The Faa is back to his old tricks…
Although he’s been offered a contract to play in the fledgling XFL, former St. Peter’s Prep standout James Souder, who attended tryout camps with the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers, told me that his football playing days are over. He’s engaged to be married, has a good job in the finance business and is planning to have a family…
One of Souder’s teammates, former Boston College standout safety Pedro Cirino, has also been offered a contract to play in the XFL and has had his rights secured by the league…
Former New England Patriots linebacker and Hudson Catholic grad Dwayne Sabb has already announced that he will play in the new league for the New York/New Jersey Hitmen.
