One call is all it takes to apply for benefits

Dear Editor:

Now it is easy for you to apply for Social Security retirement or survivor’s benefits, as easy as ordering pizza. With one call to our toll-free 800 number–1-800-772-1213–you can apply for retirement or survivor’s benefits between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on business days. It is best to apply three months before the date you want the benefit to start.

Our one call service is simple and convenient. Our representative will ask a few questions to determine if you have the basic information we need to take the claim. If so, you will be introduced to a representative who will take your claim immediately. We will mail the completed application to you for your signature.

To use the one call service to apply for retirement benefits, you need your: Social Security number, birth certificate, W-2 forms or self-employment tax return for the most recent year and financial institution name and account number to deposit benefits into your account.

You need proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were not born in the U.S.

To use the one call service to apply for survivor’s benefits, you will also need, in addition to the above information: the deceased worker’s Social Security number, your marriage certificate, if you are a widow or widower and your divorce papers if applying as a surviving divorced spouse.

When you apply for retirement or survivor’s benefits by phone, you save time. You can take care of your Social Security business with one call from the comfort of home. For more information about retirement benefits, contact Social Security on the Internet at www.ssa.gov or call our toll free number and ask for the booklet, Social Security–Retirement Benefits, Pub. No. 05-10035.
