Leadership and character outstanding in young people

Dear Editor:

On Saturday, October 14, I had the good fortune to attend the annual Union City Senior Citizen Columbus Day party at Union Hill High School.

The food was great, the music was entertaining, and the company was good fun. But the highlight of the day for me was the caring and diligent volunteer service performed for us seniors by the Union Hill High School Student Council and their President Sandy Larios. They also showed a mature graciousness in welcoming to their school the Emerson High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC who, after putting on a wonderfully patriotic show of colors and military form, shared the chores of the day with the Union Hill students.

Miss Larios and her fellow students demonstrated extraordinary responsibility and leadership in preparing the gym for our party, serving the food and cleaning up. In between all of their hard work, they found the time to get the seniors up and out of their seats to dance.

As a senior citizen, a retired educator and school principal, and a member of the Union Hill High School Class of 1952, I am proud of the way our students conducted themselves, showing great leadership and character in service to our community.

These students, both from Union Hill and Emerson, have given me faith in the future. There are some great young people out there; all we have to do is give them a chance to shine.
