Another power point snafu
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association should seriously monitor whoever produces the weekly updates in its football power point rankings, because for the second time in three weeks, there has been another major mistake in the listing.
The listing this week has Lincoln owning a 3-4 record and out of the playoff hunt in North Section 1, Group IV, when in fact, the Lions are 5-2 and are more than likely headed to the state playoffs for the first time since 1987.
The Lions can lock up a berth in the state playoffs with a victory this weekend.
Two weeks ago, the NJSIAA listed Hoboken among the Group III schools, when it is now a Group II school. The association fixed that mistake when the power point standings were released the following week.
Speaking of Lincoln, the news of the Lions’ great season has filtered down to one of the school’s most prominent alumni, namely Jets’ running back Bernie Parmalee.
At a recent Jets’ practice at Hofstra University, Parmalee was asked if he knew how Lincoln was doing and he was informed that the Lions were just about certain for a state playoff berth – something that Parmalee didn’t get a chance to do during his tenure at the school.
"I know my Lions are doing an excellent job this year," Parmalee said. "I keep in touch with people in Jersey City and they’re all excited how well my Lions are doing. I feel really good about it and real proud of what they’re doing. I want them to know how proud I am."
Duly noted…
The Hudson County daily newspaper has initiated weekly polls this season, but the credibility of the poll took a major hit this week when it listed Hoboken as Hudson County’s no. 3 team, behind St. Peter’s Prep and North Bergen.
Say what? Hoboken? No. 3 in Hudson County? I know the Red Wings’ impressive 29-game winning streak came to an end last weekend against Passaic County Tech, but they cannot drop to no. 3 in the county over one loss.
Especially when you consider that the Red Wings’ record over the last six-plus seasons is a whopping 67-2. And considering Hoboken hasn’t lost a single game to a Hudson County since October of 1994.
What in the world is this polltaker thinking about? Lose one game to an outsider and drop to third? That’s totally absurd. Hey, in this corner’s poll, Hoboken remains the king of the hill until someone in Hudson County knocks them off.
I wonder how the people of the Mile-Square City feel about that one. A year ago, I was practically hung in effigy over not picking Hoboken no. 1 in the Star-Ledger’s final poll. At least the Red Wings have always been no. 1 here …
Speaking of Hoboken, here’s one of the major reasons why that Hoboken is constantly winning. All three of the Hoboken PAL youth football teams have already clinched playoff berths for their respective weight divisions, which means one thing. That the feeder system is working in the Mile Square City.
According to PAL Director Ralph Gallo, the lightweight division’s player to watch is Desmond Bates, the middleweight’s player of the future is Edward Castellano and the heavyweight division’s top stud is Jonathan Gracesqui.
And it certainly means that the future looks bright for more winning times for the Red Wings later on down the road…
It was announced last week that Bobby Hurley has officially given up any hope of returning to professional basketball and has retired to concentrate on his new career, that of a thoroughbred horse owner…
Former Memorial wide receiver Jason Acosta, who had a fine career at The College of New Jersey and is currently an assistant coach at Rowan, received word that he will get a tryout for one of the teams in the new XFL (extreme football league). The XFL is slated to begin play in February. Acosta will head next month to a tryout camp in Florida, where he hopes to impress the new league’s coaches and administrators. The New York/New Jersey Hitmen, one of the eight teams in the league, will play at Giants Stadium…
Get-well wishes go out to a true sweetheart of a man, Gerry Callahan, who has been one of the best supporters of St. Peter’s College athletics over the years. Gerry, whose son, Brian, was just recently named the head baseball coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology, is not feeling well and needs our prayers…
North Bergen and St. Peter’s Prep to play this weekend for the HCIAA National Conference title? Seems like old times. It should be an anticipated game, one that will recall the rivalry at its highest peak…
