I want my IMF Music fests continue in Hoboken

Didn’t get enough music from the 1,000 bands that played CMJ last week? On Nov. 1 through 4, 100 more bands will be coming to 10 local venues for the Fourth Annual Hoboken Independent Music Festival.
From as far as Gainesville, Fla. to as nearby as New Brunswick, bands will be coming to the mile-square city to become part of a cooperative outside the traditional confines of the music industry and to network with other bands for gig-swapping and resource sharing.

It all begins on Wednesday with an opening party at River Street (92 River St., Hoboken) at 7 p.m. The fest will kick off with Scott Wilson’s Efendi, the exciting belly dance music, with pop songs from Turkey, Egypt, Greece and Armenia. Other shows include LSDT, El Conquistadores, Freedy Johnston, Matt Witte’s New Blood Revival, Haywood Trout, bobfields, Cropduster and Tragik. Participating venues include the Cadillac Bar, the Liquid Lounge, Lovesexy, Maxwell’s, O’Donoghues, The Planet, the Quiet Woman, River Street, the Shannon Lounge and the Whiskey Bar.

Not only will the IMF be offering great live acts, but on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., the fest is also offering an Indie Boot Camp. Hour-long seminars will take place all day at The Planet (16 Hudson St., Hoboken) with casual question-and-answer format seminars run by pro-independent music businesspeople and musicians. Musicians can learn how to get press, work with music publishers, get on the radio, book out-of-town gigs, work with an indie label and use Internet resources. A ticket for this full day seminar is $5.

Hoboken’s IMF was founded by the local band bobfields’ lead singer Doug Forbes.

“I wanted to help independent musicians help themselves,” said Forbes. “There’s always been disparity between the music business and musicians, because they don’t work together. This festival and the seminars equip the bands with knowledge to do something about it, so they can stop pointing the finger and learn that they have the power to make noise themselves. These are bands and musicians who don’t have big labels and music machines behind them, so we put them all together to get free resources from well-know talented music professionals while they get to see other bands play. Basically, it’s one week to celebrate the indie spirit and for the bands to connect.”

What’s the best part of IMF? The price. Forget about spending nearly $500 for a necklace with a few plastic CMJ cards. Tickets are only $10 for an all-access IMF pass for one night, and $20 for a festival pass, which allows its holders full access to all IMF events for the entire festival. All ticket purchases include free admission to Indie Boot Camp.

Tickets are available at Tunes in Hoboken, located at 315 Washington St., or with a credit card by phone by calling (732) 660-0840. For more IMF information, got to www.independetmusicfestival.com.
