A rail trail in the Bergen Arches is something to consider

Dear Editor: The Bergen Arches is an outstanding location for a rail trail. A rail trail or a Bergen Arches liberty trail is an alternative to use of the arches as a highway or in conjunction with a smaller road. Rail trails are multi-purpose public paths. The trails create a greenway and can be utilized to link parks and sites. A Bergen Arches rail trail could be linked to the waterfront, possibly by the 6th Street embankment or to Liberty State Park through bike lanes and marked routes. Rail trails stimulate the local economy by increasing tourism and promoting local businesses. They have been used to revitalize urban areas and typically have a positive effect on wildlife except during construction. Bicyclists, walkers, runners, in-line skaters, people with disabilities, cross-country skiers and outdoor enthusiasts use rail trails. Rail trails do not increase crime and in some cases have proven to reduce crime. Safety in the Bergen Arches can be enhanced by emergency phones and by limiting use of the trail to day light hours. Please consider your support of this idea and any reader that agrees with this use, please write the city administration and this paper. Daniel Levin
