Urbanovich gets No. 400; Giraldo back in Jersey
What’s this with local coaches all reaching milestones during the same year? St. Peter’s Prep head baseball coach Joe Urbanovich is the latest to reach a prestigious coaching milestone, earning his 400th career victory last week.
Urbanovich joins Memorial’s Tony Ferrainolo, who won his 500th game two weeks ago, and North Bergen softball coach Tom Eagleson, who won his 300th game three weeks ago. It seems to be one a week. Congratulations to Urbanovich, whose team is currently contending for both the HCIAA and NJSIAA Parochial A North titles.
Ferrainolo’s Memorial team was shockingly eliminated in the first round of the Group IV state playoffs by Hackensack, 1-0, whose pitcher Luca Petrocelli should be drafted in the upcoming major league amateur draft.
With the loss in the states, maybe Memorial can now concentrate on capturing the HCIAA title, while Prep may be at a disadvantage, trying to contend for two titles. It could be interesting…
And Hoboken was eliminated from the HCIAA playoffs in a thriller with the Prep, but perhaps now, Buddy Matthews’ team can concentrate on winning the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group III title, which is not out of the realm of possibility…
Guttenberg native John Giraldo, the former Marist High School and Monmouth University hoops star, has signed a contract to play for the New Jersey Shorecats of the United States Basketball League for the summer.
Giraldo, who plays professionally in Colombia, will get a chance to play for pay down the Shore this summer, instead of lighting up the Jersey Shore Basketball League, where they play for the love of the game.
Giraldo has always been one of the good guys in the local sports scene. It’s good to see him get a good break…
Jersey City’s Jerry Walker, the former St. Anthony and Seton Hall standout, plays for the Atlantic City Seagulls in the USBL. A little Hudson County friendly competition there…
Good luck to the locals who will participate in their respective NCAA college baseball tournaments this weekend.
Princeton’s Sean McNally (St. Peter’s Prep/Jersey City) and Rutgers’ Alberto Vasquez (Hudson Catholic/Jersey City), will see action in the NCAA Division 1 Tournament.
Montclair State’s Brian Ellerson and George Gallagher, two former Hudson Catholic Hawks and Jersey City boys, will head out to the NCAA Division 3 World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin, where yours truly will be as well.
We’ll bring you all back a hunk of cheese…
