It seems people have always realized the value of a mother. In ancient Greece, the beginning of spring meant paying homage to Rhea, the mother of the Gods. In England during the 1600s, male and female apprentices returning home on Sunday would bring small gifts or trinkets and cakes to their mothers. Contemporary times have changed very little. Hundreds of thousands of mothers across the country will be treated today to breakfast in bed, flower bouquets, trips to a restaurant, and gifts of all sorts. Not wanting to break with tradition, the Town of West New York this past Wednesday treated more than 900 senior citizen mothers from West New York and Union City to a picnic at the recreation center on the corner of 56th and Broadway. “This is tradition,” said Mayor Albio Sires, who mixed it up on the dance floor with a few seniors. “I’m an old-fashioned traditional person, and sometimes in the hustle and bustle we tend to forget those most important to us like our mothers. So this is a way to recognize them.” Sires said this is the fifth year the town has held a picnic for its senior mothers.
