Dear Editor: Who’s kidding who about the School Board Election? If one listened to the political rhetoric used by “Hoboken Parents United” throughout the recent election, you might think that the outcome was decided only by politicians, rather than parents. They continually tried to portray the “Excellence in Education’ ticket as being controlled by City Hall. Well, if you actually look at who was supporting the losing team of Parents United, there were many elected officials who endorsed and politicized what should have been an election about the future of our children. Senator Bernie Kenny, who’s supposed to represent us all as an elected State official, was featured in ads supporting Perry Belfiore, Sandra Ramos and Frances Kearnes. He used to be neutral in local, non-partisan elections, but now that he is trying to preserve his own political future, he took sides in a school board election. He’s desperately trying to hold on to his seat, which is up next year. A mayoral hopeful, Councilman David Roberts, placed his “reputation” on the line as the main backer of the failed ticket, in the hopes of “continuing to oppose the mayor.” Why doesn’t he understand that parents see through his misguided political ambitions? Add to that the fact that Sandra Ramos is the mother of a councilman. Maybe political control is OK when it is self serving? The final insult to parents was an endorsement by Congressman Robert Menendez. Kenny, Roberts and Maurice Fitzgibbons must have been desperate for his support because Menendez usually knows better than to place himself in such a position. As a Democrat, I’m very upset that Menendez would involve himself the way he did, interfering solely to benefit the interests of his political allies. I always supported Bob Menendez because of the values I thought he represented. I guess he just talks a good story. If the “Parents United” team was successful, where would our children have stood when Bernie, Maurice and David all begin fighting each other next year when they finally admit that each of them is running for mayor? If they can’t trust each other, how could they expect the parents of this city to trust them with our children? So, in the final analysis, “Hoboken Parents United” was totally political in its approach to the school election. They tried to place a disparaging label on “Excellence in Education” but failed miserably because parents recognized the fact that all the politicians were ganging up on the mayor to get him out of office. This is their goal. The results of the election proved that the voters were not fooled. We voted for the candidates who truly care about our children, not themselves! And by the way, the “Excellence in Education” candidates won 57 percent to 43 percent — a very significant win! “E.M.”
