Dear Editor: As another election comes and goes, it’s obvious that certain factions of Hoboken’s political scene just aren’t happy with their victories. It is also obvious that maintaining a high quality of life standard in Hoboken still remains a challenge mostly because politicians of a certain ilk have ignored so many important community based issues over the years forcing volunteer initiatives to emerge. This week alone The Quality of Life Coalition, The Environment committee, The Scouts, The 11th Street Island Volunteers, The Friends of The Hoboken Charter School and Hoboken High School all sponsored major events. Events and organizations like these are the reason why Hoboken is one of the best communities in New Jersey to call home. The politicians alone aren’t. I want to thank each of these groups for doing more than their share of fighting and swimming against the tide in an effort to retain what’s left of a neighborhood-friendly, family-based community, rather than the over-developed dormitory-style housing crammed vision of the Russo administration spawned in exchange for their huge campaign war chests, self-interests and personal gain for their select few. Granted the mayor and some of his council people do show up at these events and support them. However, it is more important that all city officials independently adopt and maintain a vision that’s in the citizen’s best interest from the start, not only after packed zoning board meetings, disrespected residents, broad community outcry, petition drives and appeals in court. I want everyone to know that while Dave Roberts, Ruben Ramos, Jr. and myself take our lumps in letters ghost authored by Mr. and Mrs. Russo’s club, we continue to stand up for you whether we win or lose a given battle. We believe that the letters on this page don’t necessarily represent the sentiments of the citizenry at large. Tony Soares Councilman At Large PS: To Mayor Russo. Your recent letter confirms my belief; the only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner.
