Good things are ‘definitely’ worth waiting for…and I’m still

Dear Editor: This is in response to April 2 letter from Guy Catrillo. Hats off to Kevin Sluka, Director of the Jersey City Department of Public Works for avoiding phone calls last summer from the many moms who are members of the Grace Church Playgroup. We would call because we were concerned with safety issues which remain today after the renovation. The first and foremost being not a complete gate around the woefully inadequate play structure, not to mention the steps we must ruin our stroller wheels on and wake sleeping little ones getting to and fro the woefully inadequate play structure. Any average toddler can run from the structure and end up in the middle of Barrow Street in a flash, as any parent or caregiver knows. Leaving any parent or caregiver resembling a victim of some strange nervous disorder, our heads jerking around with a panic stricken look — where is my kid! Especially if you have two or more. Director Sluka, let us not put another child’s name on the memorial tombstone located near the play area. Now, for the woefully inadequate structure. Since the park is basically used by two groups, dogs and kids/caregivers, it is obvious neither group was really considered. During the afternoon you will find 90 percent of the park’s activity crammed into 10 percent of the park i.e., the play structure. As soon as school is out all of the kids run to the structure (naturally) and those of us with little ones either grab our little ones and run or stand by them like bodyguards, resembling bodyguards with some strange nervous disorder. Director Sluka did not take into consideration a toddler play area and a school group play area like the Elysian Park in Hoboken and many other parks across the nation. My question is has the park passed state safety inspection? A nanny overhead the inspectors saying “no.” Which leads me to reveal how many injuries have taken place so far. One crawler had his teeth knocked out (I believe the parents are suing), a shoulder dislocation and my one and half year old has shed blood as well. The structure is not only inadequate but it is dangerous! Not to mention the two moms arguing one day that almost lead to blows. And it is not ever summer, imagine a heat wave! Director Sluka, why did you make a park in memory of days gone passed of leisure, quiet times with a Victorian atmosphere instead of a contemporary user-friendly park? Please do not make the same mistake at Hamilton Park. Gwen Shook
