Rent control referendum efforts rewarding

Dear Editor: As a recent addition to Dan Tumpson “crew,” I am pleased to report my participation in the referendum process gave me unique opportunity to get involved in the community in a positive way. Many concerned citizens on both sides of the issue stopped by to debate and educate themselves about the housing and tax situation in Hoboken. Sadly, my first meeting with many residents was also a goodbye as tenants were moving out due to the inability to afford the rents in Hoboken or to tolerate the often hostile manner of their landlords and lack of apartment and city services. I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition and everyone who congratulated us on providing this valuable service to the community. To those residents desperately trying to hustle by with overflowing laundry baskets and arm fulls of dry-cleaning and groceries in preparation for the long work week ahead, I thank you for your patience. City Hall officials and staff were pleasant, willing and extremely cooperative in providing us with the appropriate documents necessary for the referendum process and contributing the many long, laborious hours required to file and verify the huge stack of documentation — the much satisfying fruits of our labor.
