Hoboken is a better place because of you!

Dear Editor: With spring in the air, many Hobokenites think to earthly pursuits such as tree and flower plantings, plant sales and our seasonal Farmers’ Market, which will begin its fourth year in 2000. What most Hoboken residents don’t know is that the driving force behind these and so many volunteer efforts that benefit us all, has literally moved to greener pastures. Mrs. Donna Cahill, former President of the Environmental Committee of Hoboken, retired in late January and moved to a 5-acre farm in New Hampshire. Her goal for now is not to emulate our own loyal farmers, but rather move closely to enjoy the environment, which she has protected for so long. We, the Board of Trustees of the Environment Committee of Hoboken, would like to publicly thank Donna for her many years of unforgettable leadership and recognize her achievements: leading the fight for the western alignment of the Light Rail project; initiating the Farmers’ Market; organizing city gateway tree and flower plantings; spearheading the Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition in the campaigns to protect Hoboken from the NJ Devils’ arena and behemoths such as the proposed 1600 Park Avenue development; bringing the Hackensack Meadowlands Preservation Alliance’s dire needs to the attention of our City Council and garnering their endorsement of its nation-wide efforts; fighting for the designation of the “mercury condo” as a Superfund site. This is just a short sampling of the scope of Donna’s efforts. Usually unheralded, and greatly preferring it that way, Donna’s regular contributions of time, stamina and good will to protect our environment and make Hoboken a better place do deserve a heartfelt expression of gratitude and appreciation. So, in a word, Donna, “thanks” for all you have done for and with us in the past, and the model you provided for us to follow in the future. The Environment Committee of Hoboken Board of Trustees
