Fighting the good fight on aircraft noise

Dear Editor: In a Letter to the Editor dated March 5, 2000, J. F. Perez states that the ocean routing plan New Jersey Coalition Against Aircraft Noise (NJCANN) is advocating is the same one I endorsed in 1998. That is not the case. Their plan involves Runway 4 and, according to the estimates of NJCANN’s own consultant and the Federal Aviation Administration, it will increase noise in 13 towns in Hudson and Bergen Counties that I represent! Therefore I will not support it, as I will not endorse any plan which increases noise for thousands of people in my District. NJCANN is based in Union County. In addition to the problems the residents in that county experience, my constituents in Hudson and Bergen Counties also suffer from the noise generated by Teterboro, JFK International, Newark and LaGuardia Airports. That is why I have introduced federal legislation requiring that all aircraft, not just commercial jets, but also private planes flying into all area airports be equipped with the quietest engines. I have also: co-sponsored legislation directing the U.S. Department of Transportation to invest in the next generation of even quieter airplane engine technology for all aircraft introduced legislation curbing air pollution in and around airports, and persuaded the FAA to begin redesigning the nation’s airspace with the New Jersey/New York area &#45 before any other part of the nation. I am proud of the fact that I have fought and continue to fight the battle against aircraft noise on all fronts. As a lifelong Northern New Jersey resident with two small children, improving the quality of my life for Hudson and Bergen Counties is critical. That is why I have devoted so much of my time and my staff’s time to this goal. Rep. Steven Rothman Member of Congress
