Time capsule still missing: Still no clues two years after town’s 100th Anniversary

WEST NEW YORK – The West New York time capsule, which was buried in 1898 and included 100 year-old memorabilia items that were to be dug up in remembrance of the town’s history, was sought in 1998 as part of the town’s 100th Anniversary celebration. After an extensive search, the capsule was not found and is still missing. “As far as I know, they ended their efforts to search for the time capsule at the end of their centennial events,” said Bill Campbell, a partner of Campbell & Fitzgibbons, the public relations agency that spotlighted West New York’s centennial events. The agency will also handle events for Union City’s 75th Diamond Jubilee. According to Oscar Miqueli, the West New York UEZ coordinator and a member of the West New York Centennial committee in 1998, the search is still on for the capsule, although not as fervent as before. “We have talked to many different people and we’ve gone and dug, but no luck so far,” he said. Miqueli added that because facts about the whereabouts of the capsule are sketchy, word-of-mouth information had to be relied upon. “We’re going by what old-timers tell us,” he said. “We were told that it was by the flagpole in Memorial High School because an old timer said he remembered something about a time capsule around there. We also went by the memorial on Boulevard East. Also at the liberty bell by Town Hall here and nothing. We looked into the Town Hall vault and there were no documents among the others that gave us information about the capsule. We were even told that it might be in the front of Town Hall where the stairs are now, but that was built like 10 years ago and no one wants to go digging there.” Miqueli said there have been talks about burying another capsule, but so far no action has been taken.
