Grateful to Congressmen Menendez and Rothman for health center funding

Dear Editor: The people of our community owe Congressman Menendez and Congressman Rothman real thanks for their leadership in increasing funding for community health centers in the last Congress. Largely due to their support, federal health center funding will increase by $99.3 million, allowing over 3,000 health center sites, like the North Hudson Community Action Corporation Health Center here in West New York, to expand services to over 275,000 more people next year nationally. Health centers are critical in communities like ours because they serve anyone who comes through the door, regardless of their ability to pay. Last year health centers provided primary and preventive health care services to over 11 million people, including 4.4 million people with no health insurance. In addition, health centers serve many of the low-income and minority populations throughout the country, including farm workers and homeless individuals. By treating people in a health center setting, instead of waiting for a visit to the emergency room, health centers save taxpayers over $12 billion per year in health care costs and much more than that in lost productivity and reduced quality of life. We are extremely fortunate that we have such forceful advocates like Congressman Menendez and Congressman Rothman. On behalf of the people served by our health center in West New York and on behalf of our entire community, we should be grateful to Congressmen Menendez and Rothman. Michael A. Leggiero North Hudson Community Action Corp. President/CEO
