Crossing guards lauded for care of children

Dear Editor: I am writing this letter to thank all of those faithful crossing guards (lady cops in the local vernacular) who each day take such great care of our children. My daughter attends Hoboken Catholic Academy (formerly John Paul II, formerly St. Ann’s.) Each morning she is greeted with a warm smile by Mrs. Farina who will cross her by hand. Mrs. Farina makes sure her coat is buttoned properly, guides her through puddles and ice and makes sure that I am informed of any schedule changes in the school. Clearly this is over and above what is in her job description. I see this caring attitude with all the other guards too. As I drive to and from the school each morning, I am greeted with a smile and a wave from the kind ladies on the corners of 2nd, 4th and 5th and Madison streets and also 3rd and Monroe Street. It makes me feel as if I have left my child in the are of family members. They are truly the unsung heroes of Hoboken. Danny Altilio
