From 1995 to 1997 I worked at the Barnes & Noble in Hoboken. Because the store is small we rarely had celebrities for book signings, but one day in 1996 the Barnes & Noble corporate office called and asked if Bill Bradley, then a United States Senator, could stop by and sign copies of his book Time Present, Time Past: A Memoir. Our manager said of course, and they told him to expect Bradley within two hours. As a bookseller I was supposed to be completely out of the proceedings, but I have always been a huge Knicks fan; one of my favorite childhood books was The Open Man by legendary Knick forward Dave DeBusschere (okay, I was a weird kid), which was filled with tales of DeBusschere’s roommate Dollar Bill. I was absolutely thrilled by Bradley’s impending visit, and there was no way he was going to leave that store without speaking to me.
