Let’s meet and resolve our differences

Dear Editor: Let me thank Michael Korman for responding to my letter to the editor in the Hoboken Reporter. When I became President of the Hoboken Chamber of Commerce in 1997, I made a courtesy call on City Hall. At this meeting I asked how the Chamber could better work with the city, I asked to have regular meetings with the city, I asked if we could serve on the various boards the city has commissioned. I was point blankly told that “this administration does not work that way.” Michael, you were part of that meeting, so I’m surprised that you would criticize the Chamber for not having regular meetings with the city. Michael Korman does make some good points, and in all fairness, the city has worked hard in improving the look of the downtown business district. However, with all the aesthetics, and notwithstanding the fact that some business owners park at the parking meters by their businesses, also not withstanding that City Hall has taken 40 or so spaces away from the downtown business district so its workers can park near where they work, or not withstanding the metered parking on Hudson Street between 1st and 2nd is dominated by police department employees’ vehicles, there is just not enough parking available for shoppers in the downtown shopping district. Michael, obviously we have differences of opinions but I do think that we both want to do the best for the city of Hoboken. So, rather than continue our dialogue through letters to the editor, I suggest that we begin to have regular meetings to resolve our differences. As a preliminary to our first meeting we should co-host a business forum. All Hoboken businesses would be invited to this meeting. From this meeting we can find out first hand what’s working and what the business community needs from us to move forward. Information gathered at this meeting can be used as an agenda for us to follow at our regular meetings. Michael, I look forward to your call to set up these meetings. John Parchinsky, Jr. President, Hoboken Chamber of Commerce
