Hoboken residents will soon be able to drop anchor uptown if a local developer’s plans to build an 87-slip marina at the pier between 12th and 13th streets are approved by the city. The Planning Board met Thursday night to begin consideration of the project. It is expected to come up for a vote the next time the board meets on March 7. The $750,000 project, which would be financed by the Applied Companies, would provide mooring for boats, but no facilities to repair them or re-fuel them. Michael Barry, a partner in Applied Housing, said that the developers had an agreement in place with Liberty Landing at Liberty Park in Jersey City that would allow boat owners who used the shipyard marina to take care of repairs and refueling there. If approval of the plans is granted soon, officials say the marina could be ready for use this summer. It would be for the exclusive use of city residents, Barry said. “We want this just to be a local marina for residents of the city and of the Shipyard,” he explained. “It’s really just for people who live in Hoboken.” In addition to the slips, officials said the company planned to build a small yacht club that would provide a covered area where boat owners could relax and eat a meal. Barry said that he had “not run the numbers” on what it would cost to rent a slip at the facility yet.
