Dear Editor: The Battleship New Jersey has finally arrived in the Philadelphia Naval Yards. In January 2000, we expect the Secretary of the Navy to make a final decision as to where the most decorated ship in the 200-year history of the Navy will be sent. The New Jersey Battleship Commission appointed by Governor Whitman and past governors, overwhelmingly voted for Bayonne and The Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal. These members were made up of admirals, captains, Navy veterans and dedicated business leaders. Their decision for Bayonne was based on where this grand old battleship would be seen by the most people. The Bayonne location, close to The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the New Jersey Turnpike, will insure the greatest number of visitors to this historic battleship. We feel the Bayonne location will take nothing away from New York’s Intrepid Air Craft Carrier Museum, but will help attract more visitors to both ships since one is a carrier and the other a battleship. It was the Battleship New Jersey that protected the Intrepid during World War II. We urge all who read this to call or write your congressman, or send a letter to Richard Danzig, Secretary of the Navy, 1000 Navy-The Pentagon, Washington, DC 20350-1000. Peter Murphy, President Hudson County Chamber of Commerce
