An open letter to Jim Hague: You have done a grave injustice to the Hoboken High School football team, its student body and the entire community. How dare you use subjective judgment as your criteria for casting your vote against Hoboken High School? You, who in the final game picked Wayne Hills to beat Hoboken, should have been most acutely aware that personal judgment often fails as a measuring device. Additionally, to factor into your decision the first scrimmage of the season — August 26 — begs one to ask “Why are you looking for reasons to deprive Hoboken its #1 ranking?” While it is ridiculous to even look at scrimmages let’s follow that pursuit to its natural conclusion. Here is the scenario: Hoboken scrimmaged St. Joe’s and lost. Hoboken scrimmaged Neptune H.S. and lost. Hoboken scrimmaged Delbarton H.S. and won — it was not close. St. Joe’s scrimmaged Hoboken and won. St. Joe’s scrimmaged Elizabeth and lost. St. Joe’s scrimmaged Ramapo and won. Is the natural conclusion: A. Hoboken out of top 10 — lost 2 scrimmages B. Elizabeth #1 — they beat St. Joe’s or C. Ridiculous To quote you, “Hoboken has won 63 of 64 games.” That is a streak of excellence never before achieved in the annals of Hudson County High School history. It’s hard to think that another team will come along some day and top what Hoboken has accomplished. What amazes me — actually disgusts me — is that for all the games, for all the years you have covered Hoboken High football, you could not see that the only way to vote was Hoboken #1. Jim, the voting released by the Star Ledger revealed that 10 votes were cast for Hoboken as #1. How do you think those writers decided to cast their votes for Hoboken? Da — maybe they thought and rightfully so, the choice is a “no brainer”. Make #2, #1. You know further, that with continued declining enrollment Hoboken is doomed to be a Group II school. The unwritten rule is Group II schools do not compete for #1 in the Star Ledger. The Star Ledger Trophy is the epitome of team accomplishment. It is the most coveted award a school could earn. Circumstance and luck sometimes factor into being #1. In this case you, Jim Hague, decided #1. How can you live with the decision? George Maguire
