Give Thanks Food Drive
The Bayonne Chamber of Commerce is holding its annual Give Thanks Food Drive from November through 18, with 24 chamber members participating by holding a donation box in their places of business to collect food or gift cards.
Carepoint Health is donating a truck’s worth of food for the Give Thanks Food Drive. The hospital keeps food on hand to feed its patients, and instead of letting some of that food go to waste, it decided to donate it. The hospital also is donating $15,000 worth of Shop Rite gift cards to families in need throughout Hudson County during this holiday season.
The chamber is holding a networking event in conjunction with the food drive on November 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Da Vinci Room on 165 Broadway. Hors d’oeurvres will be provided at a cash bar; the dress code is business casual. The entry fee is $20. All donations will go to soup kitchens and food pantries in Bayonne. Residents can register early at bayonnechamber.org.

72-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run accident
A 72-year-old woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck, allegedly in a hit-and-run accident on Friday, November 11 on 32nd Street and Broadway. The following day, police arrested Nicholas Frett, 24, for allegedly causing the death of Bayonne resident Mary Ann Koszyk, who died hours after the incident. Frett was charged with drivingwith a suspended license, and knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, according to police. Frett’s bail was set at $250,000, and he was transported to the Hudson County Jail, according to police.
Two fires, one dog rescued
The Bayonne Fire Department (BFD) responded to a porch fire on 474 Avenue A late Friday, November 11, quickly extinguishing the one-alarm blaze, according to Fire Chief Keith Weaver. A fire investigator determined that disposed smoking materials was the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
On Sunday, November 13, the BFD responded to a one-alarm fire at 86 West 9th Street at 4:30 p.m. for flames reported in the rear of the building. According to the Bayonne Fire Department, firefighters arriving on the scene found fire in the basement and the first floor and used three hose lines to quickly extinguish and contain the fire. One dog was removed safely from the building. No injuries were reported. A fire investigator determined the fire was caused by an electrical power strip.
Residents are urged to make sure cigarettes are extinguished before disposing of them, and electrical power strips are plugged in properly and are up-to-date.
