Halloween safety assembly at Huber Street School
Officer William Eccles from the LEAD program discussed Halloween safety with 3rd through 5th graders. Students learned about how to stay safe when they trick or treat on Halloween. He talked about how they should walk in the neighborhood and be very careful when they are crossing the streets and always be aware of their surroundings. Students came up to demonstrate various masks, capes, and Halloween costumes that are not suitable for walking. It was an informative assembly that provided students with the knowledge they need to stay safe when trick or treating.
Halloween activities the next two weeks
The annual ragamuffin parade is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23. The parade leaves from Clarendon School at 1 p.m. Residents can also dress up their pets for Halloween. Pumpkin picking and painting will take place at Buchmuller Park after the parade.
On Sunday, Oct. 30, wear old clothes for a night of mischief on Buchmuller Park basketball courts. At 6 p.m. students from 5th through 8th grade will throw confetti, streamers, and anything that makes a mess around the courts. Be advised that there are no eggs or flour socks allowed.
The Secaucus Animal Shelter is throwing a Halloween costume party Friday, Oct. 28, at La Reggia Restaurant. The party lasts from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. There will be dinner, raffles, dancing, and a prize for the best costume. Donations are $60 per person with dinner, dancing, and beer and wine included. Costumes are optional. For tickets call (201) 563-2161. All proceeds benefit the Secaucus Animal Shelter. La Reggia Restaurant is on 40 Wood Ave.
The fourth annual Trunk-or-Treat takes place at the Recreation Center on Monday, Oct. 31, at 4 p.m. Decorate your car trunks and fill them with treats for trick-or-treaters. Costumes are also allowed. If it rains, the event will be moved indoors. This is for Secaucus residents only. Vehicle pre-registration is required to participate and hand out candy. Halloween at the Meadowlands is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at DeKorte Park. There will be games, crafts, and activities throughout the evening, including hayrides and the witch’s den. Take your kids on the “Historical Figures of the Meadowlands,” the not-so spooky walk where they’ll meet the pirates who inhabited the region in the 1600s, Muskrat Trappers, Pig Farmers and other distinctive figures that give the Meadowlands its unique personality. $8 per person; registration is required. Walks are recommended for children ages 5 through 12 and last approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Resident art show Nov. 2

Diwali celebrated Oct. 15
DIWALI — In Buchmuller Park Saturday, Oct. 15, the Indian Caucus of Secaucus and residents celebrated Diwali, or the Festival of Lights. The event was free for the entire day and included a DJ, Indian cuisine, kids’ activities, and free prizes.
Independent film screening and discussion series at the library
The final meeting of the year for the independent film series will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct.23. According to Friends of the Library President Zinnia Miller, the 2016 film series, which is open to all residents, will conclude with a showing of Grandma, a 2015 comedy-drama starring Lily Tomlin in her first lead role since the release of Big Business in 1988. Following the movie, Miller will lead an open discussion of the film.
After this weekend’s event, the independent film series will be on hiatus until January 2017. More information about the 2017 season will be announced soon. Registration for each film is recommended. Call the library at (201) 330-2083, ext. 4011.
Reception for artist Deer Qi at the library
The Secaucus Public Library is holding a reception on Friday, Oct. 28, from 6 until 8 p.m. to celebrate local photographer Deer Qi. Qi, who was a professional photographer for more than 30 years in China before moving to the United States. He’s the library’s Artist in Residence for October. His work will be on display in the Panasonic meeting room on the library’s second floor until Monday, Oct. 31. The reception is open to the public and provides an opportunity for members of the community to meet Deer Qi, view his artwork, and enjoy light refreshments.
Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the National Character Education Conference in Washington, DC
Secaucus schools’ Director of Curriculum and Instruction Hope Blecher recently presented at the 19th annual National Character.org conference in Washington, DC. This year’s theme was educate, inspire, empower, and build productive and caring citizens. Along with Maryellen Moffitt, Daryl Wainer, and Loren Sass, Blecher co-created the presentation, titled The Arts: Fostering resilience, respect and literacy.
During the live workshop, it was standing-room-only as Blecher and Sass shared their experiences and answered questions from people committed to character education from around the country. While greeting participants and learning about the Washington, DC community, Blecher met with members of the education department of the Newseum. Blecher hopes that staff from the Secaucus Public Schools can be recognized for their achievements in the area of character education and participate in next year’s 20th anniversary conference. The 2017 theme is Character: The Missing Peace.
