Pedestrian killed on Avenue E

On Oct. 13, Mikulas “Nick” Vira, 72, a 20-year resident of Bayonne, was struck while crossing Avenue E, allegedly by a gray Saturn driven by Edward Timoldi, 90, at 6:55 p.m. at 21st Street, according to police.
When police arrived at the scene, Vira was unresponsive and transported to Jersey City Medical Center in critical condition. According to police, he sufferedhead trauma and a broken pelvis and was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m. on Oct. 13.
Police said that witnesses and Timoldi said the driver had the green light when Vira crossed the street. The incident remains under investigation, and no charges or summonses have been issued, according to police.
According to his obituary, Vira was a retired building superintendent. The funeral Mass is Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church at 30 East 25th Street.

Call for artists – The Big Small Show

Submissions are now being accepted for the fourth annual Big Small Show at the Drawing Rooms on 180 Grand Street in Jersey City, which will take placefrom December 16 to February 18. The show will exhibit close to 100 artists in the New York/New Jersey metro area in nine gallery rooms. There is no fee to submit; all submissions are due by November 7.
Painting, framed works on paper, and wall-hung three-dimensional works completed in the past two years in any media on any material will be considered. Dimensions limited to 30″ or less. All works in the exhibit should be for sale. 65 percent to the artist, and 35 percent goes to support Drawing Rooms.
Accepted artists will contribute a hanging fee of $40 which includes the cost of a copy of Drawing Rooms 2016 Yearbook. A work from each artist in the exhibit will be reproduced in the Yearbook catalogue. The catalogue will also be available to view online and for sale on Amazon and at Drawing Rooms.

HCCC seeks vendors for Holiday Marketplace

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is soliciting participation from area small businesses and young entrepreneurs for a Holiday Marketplace scheduled for Saturday, December 10. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the HCCC Culinary Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Transportation Center. Admission for the public is free.
The College’s Division of Non-Traditional Programs has allocated spaces for 55 local businesses, which will take place on two floors of the Culinary Conference Center; a special section will be designated for Young Entrepreneurs, ages 9 to 15. Attendees will be treated to complimentary hot apple cider or cocoa and live music. There will be a Cultural Corner with information about holidays and customs celebrated by the diverse population of Hudson County.
The college will publicize the event via press releases, newspaper and online ads, email blasts, local blogs, and social media.
The vendor with the best holiday-themed table will win a table for 10 at the Culinary Café.
The cost for participating, which includes a six-foot table, two chairs, and a free parking pass, is $75 for vendors, $10 for young entrepreneurs, and $60 for businesses that are members of the following organizations: Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, Hoboken Chamber of Commerce, Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ, African American Chamber of Commerce of NJ, Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce, and Hudson County Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises. Hudson Heroes

The HudsonHeroes Hockey Team, a non-profit made up of first responders from Hudson County that hosts events such as hockey games to help raise money and awareness for charities in the area, is playing a game on October 22 against the Bergen Backdraft, another hockey team made up of first responders, at 5 pm at the Rich Korpi Ice Rink at Bayonne High School.
The gameis for the benefit The Tomorrow’s Children’s Fund, a charity based out of Hackensack Hospital that provides aid to families with children who are battling cancer. The game will be the inaugural event where the two teams will play for the Michael Romano Memorial Cup. Michael was a young boy from Bayonne who passed away several years ago after a long battle with cancer and The Tomorrow’s Children’s Fund assisted his family. The entrance fee for the game will be $10 and we will have raffles and a 50/50 and all proceeds will benefit the Tomorrow’s Children’s Fund.
